CHKDSK Errors

How to Troubleshoot and Repair CHKDSK Errors

What if CHKDSK isn't able to fix the disk?

About CHKDSK

Windows operating systems include several disk checking utilities to help users maintain their systems and troubleshoot problems that might arise. To scan the computer’s hard drive for errors, Microsoft includes the CHKDSK disk-scanning tool. CHKDSK scans for physical errors, bad clusters and file system errors. The CHKDSK tool can list the problems it finds, restore damaged files and data and fix problems it finds on the hard drive.

When CHKDSK Doesn’t Work

If there are errors on your system, it is possible that CHKDSK might try to run, but fail to run properly. You might see an error message that says something like:

“Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. A disk check has been scheduled. Windows will now check the disk.”

Create Backup Copies of your Data and Files

At this point, if possible, you should create back up copies of your files, folders and data. Hard drive failure can render the system unusable and the data irretrievable. Use CD ROMs or flash drives to save copies of your material.

Open CHKDSK from the Recovery Console

In Windows XP, if you aren’t able to run CHKDSK due to system errors, you can try launching the Recovery Console and try to open the tool from there. To open the Recovery Console in XP:

  1. Insert your XP startup disk into the drive and reboot the computer
  2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to open the Recovery Console
  3. If necessary, choose the appropriate operating system installation
  4. Enter the Administrative password when prompted. If you don’t have a password, leave it blank and press Enter
  5. At the command prompt that opens type chkdsk c: /p /r /f it is important to leave the spaces between the switches and to include all the symbols in the example.
  • /p will scan the hard disk drive even if not flagged as dirty, /r will locate bad sectors and recover readable data and /f will attempt to fix any found errors.

Reformat the Hard Drive

If the CHKDSK tool still can’t fix the hard drive, the problem is likely severe. A last ditch effort before considering a new hard disk is to reformat the drive. This will mean losing everything on your system, but might be able to write to all the sectors, re-initialize the surface and restore the file system. If formatting is unsuccessful, then unfortunately your hard drive is done.

See if you can find a software program referenced in the chkdsk error and then use this program uninstaller and then re-install a fresh copy

You should ideally create an msdos boot disk prior to changing things in ms-dos
